"..if you're going to tell me that I'm going to start howling at the moon, eating peoples cats, and will spend the rest of my life having to get waxed if I want to wear a bathing suit, then I don't think I can handle it, either. I like cats and I tried waxing once, and that hurt like a son of a gun."
Born at midnight was a fun and refreshing read that s a perfect books to read during a marathon, to help you get out of a reading slump, or simply a it's a delicious book to devour.
Kylie's parents are getting a divorce, and with all the fighting and chances Kylie needs a break. she tries to escape the drama at home and goes to a party with her best friend. While Kylie thinks the party will be a fun time it only adds more drama when the cops bust the party. Her mom believes Kylie is spiraling out of control, and decides it would be in Kylie's best interest to spend the summer at a camp for troubled teens. On the bus with the other teens Kylie starts to notice that there is something off about them. When they arrive at the camp she learns that the camp isn't for troubled teens, but instead it's for teens with paranormal gifts. while everyone is finding out what they are Kylie learns that once again she may not fit in with her peers. Does Kylie have some paranormal element or was she brought to the camp by mistake?
While this summer camp is filled with mysteries and paranormal creates the friendships and summer romance dramas felt relatable. Born at Midnight is a coming of age story, and the main character Kylie learns so many life lessons that we've all had to bare. Kylie learns that while some friendships fade with time others last longer then one may think. She learns that sometimes love isn't enough for some people. Growing up has its growing pains, but who you have by your side during the journey is what's important. She discovers the heartache that comes with first loves, and redeeming love. Hunter did an excellent job of showing the trails of growing up. The characters where fleshed out and everyone had their own problems to conquer. There's great diversity of problems that the characters had to learn to deal with. It all felt real and reliable. The problems diverse from family not accepting a loved ones to another struggling with a learning disability and more. By the end of this book we get to see many of these characters grow and conquer their problems and the growth in the characters was phenomenal.
While the description on Good reads describes some of the character's paranormal elements I didn't read it before reading Born at Midnight and I recommend you doing the same because Goodreads gives away some of the character's paranormal gifts. Learning what everyone was had me itching to figure it out. Every character's paranormal gift truly addd to their personality and character arch. I appreciated how ever paranormal aspect seemed to fit each character and it never felt like it was an after thought int he plotting process. I feel like this books is more character drive and the plot was building up for the second book, but it didn't fall flat.
The only thing that I didn't love whole heartedly was the romance. There is one relationship that I was rooting for but int he end it fell flat. The love triangle in the book didn't work for me, and I felt like ti was more of a convenance relationships. I didn't felt the excitement I usually do in a paranormal romance. I like a heavy romance in a book, and while there was a lot of romance it just felt boring to me. I wasn't getting excited when the love interest were interacting with Kylie, and I just wanted to get back to the other subplots of the story. I do believe that it has potential to be better int he second book, and I look forward to reading it to see.
Overall I recommend this book for anyone who wants to read a fun paranormal read that you can finish quickly. If you like a coming of age, character driven, paranormal read give Born at Midnight a try!
