Weekly Recap

This week has been pretty calm. The fall open house for our boutique went well last week. I think I'm overly exhausted from it, so I've been taking it easy. I am waiting on some job news so if you could send up a prayer or good vibes for me that would be appreciated!

The hubs and I took a trip to the next town over on Friday, and went to this cute indie coffee shop. It was so refreshing, and makes me wonder why I ever go to Starbucks.  Well it's mostly because we have zero indie coffee shops in our town, and someone needs to fix that!

While in the big city the hubs took me to the bookstore!
I cannot tell you guys the last time we went together, and I cherish when we get the time to do so. I didn't find the books I was looking of, but it was just nice to stroll and look.

I've been working on redoing my office. I really want it to be a space for writing, and not just working and storing items for the boutique. I just need a change of pace in that room. It is starting to feel like a place I get trapped in, and we all know that is not good for creativity.

I am starting something new on the blog MONDAY, and I am super excited about it. I am curious to see what kind of response it gets. It's always excited to start something new.

Tell me how your week went in the comments below. If you do a weekly recap post, please leave a link in the comments. I would love to read your post!

I hope you guys have a lovely Sunday.

Tea Time Talk: What I REALLY Think About Book Clubs

Disclaimer: This is all in good fun. I am not being mean or bashing book clubs. This is a discussion post, and I love that we all have different thoughts and ideas. It's what makes the world go round.

The Good Side To Books Clubs

It helps you get out of your reading comfort zone
Getting out of your reading comfort zone can be scary. When you have friends that enjoy the same books you do, they can introduce you to new genres. You know you can trust their taste so it makes it easier to give it a try.
You get to try a book you might have never picked up for yourself, and love it.
There may be a book that you haven't heard of. Sometimes a member will pick an old hidden gem, and you wouldn't of known about this amazing book if it wasn't for them.
You get to talk books with friends!
I mean there isn't much to say about this but YAY

You meet new people that you already have something in common with.
The only person I have in my life that loves to read is my husband and its great, but with his job he doesn't get to read much. Being a member of a book club allows me to meet new people, and we already have reading in common. Finding friends that love to read is hard for me. Meeting other bookworms is a win in my book.

Making Time For Yourself & Your Hobby
It's hard making time for yourself, I know a lot of us struggle with it. Most of the time I don't realize how desperately I need some me time, until I am yelling at no one in particular about why I cant find my favorite pair of socks. Yeah it happens right? Being a member of a book club enforces you to take time to read. When you go to the meeting it gets you out of the house to discus something you enjoy.

When The Book Club Isn't The Right Fit

Here are some of my PERSONAL problems I have had lately with the book clubs I am in,

No One Ever Wants To Pick YA
Well no one EVER picks YA. When it was my turn to pick a book I picked a YA read., The person over the book club asked me to pick another one. Why is it that I must "broaden my horizons" but people refuse to read a "younger" genre?

We Are Suppose To Pick Different Types Of Books Right?
Everyone pretty much picks the same genre. It's either A.) a thriller or B.) historical fiction. I understand that these are great books to pick for a book club. These genres have great conversational points, but they start to feel repetitive to me.

When You Never Get Into The Book
Do you ever feel like you never enjoy the book? I understand it could be because of the reasons above but it's really discouraging. Honestly I like when there are different opinions, and I think it makes for great debate. Here's the bad part though, I don't always want to be the negative Nancy. I do feel like if there was more diverse in the reading I would enjoy it more, but so far no such luck.

It Gets Real Awkward When You Want To Leave The Group
I want to be clear I have one Facebook club that I LOVE. The books are pretty diverse, we usually area lucky enough to have the author join the group and discus the book. Yeah it's as amazing as it sounds! So that group is seriously a field of daisies.
Then I have another book club  and it's a field of tumbleweeds. They stick to the same type of books, and this causes most of the people in the group to not interact. The host gets frustrated and I can see why, but I mean if there isn't diversity what do you expect? I do want to leave this group, but every month I wait to see if there is a different genre picked, and nope of course not. I want to leave, but there are only around 13 of us, and if I leave that's going to be pretty noticeable. I really do like the host and don't want to hurt her feelings. So that means this girl is stuck right?  I do plan on talking to the group again and seeing if we can make some changes.

As you can see there are great reasons to join a book club, and I do recommend it. I have met some of the best people through book clubs. I just believe you have to find the right fit for you. Make sure your book club is diverse. Don't be afraid to dislike a book and have opinions. When there is a pattern of not liking the books it may be time to find a new club, but try to talk to your group first. They may not realize the pattern, and there may be others that feel the same way as you. Speak up and hopefully changes can be made, If you are in a great book club make sure you appreciate it. Maybe thank the leader of the group and/or thank the other members for giving you a safe place to discus books.

I would love to learn your thoughts on book clubs. Have you had any luck with them? What do you think is the best and worse part of book clubs? Do you have any advice on having a successful book club?
I hope you guys have an amazing Friday!

Review: The Raven Boys

Title: The Raven Boys
Series: The Raven Cycle #1
Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Pages: 409
Overall Goodreads Rating: 4.05
Published: September 18th 2012 by Scholastic Press
My Rating: 5/5 tea cups

Well the jury is out, and this book is everything that everyone says it is. I though there was no way it would hold up to the hype, but here I am eating crow (or raven). The Raven Boys is stunningly unique with heartbreaking love, and dark lyrical writing. I will say that if you go in thinking this book is about a girl fighting her fate of kissing and killing her first love, you are dead wrong. This book is so much more than that, and it will leave you breathless. This book is about character development. How they fight and refuse to play with the cards life hands them, and making their own family. Oh and there's also land lines, a dead prince, psychics, and tarot cards.

I am going to say what everyone else says so yes I am ready for the eye rolls. The Raven Boys has a complex plot that is better unknown ahead of time. It is very evident that Stiefvater meant for the plot to be mysterious and meant to learn as you go. I will say that even the description on goodreads is a little misleading, and gives the reader the wrong impression of what to expect in this story. In a nutshell what you need to know is Blue lives with a family of psychics, and she has grown up believing in their powers. This gives her a different way of looking at the world. When she meets the raven boys, and learns about their quest she jumps on the opportunity to learn more about land lines, a dead prince, and fate. That's all you need to know. I promise just learn to trust me.

I cannot remember the last time I felt like characters were real, and we were friends, and I needed to know they were okay. I read the physical book and listened to the audio version. I had to have both because I couldn't leave my friends hanging. I know I sound crazy, but when you read this book you will understand. I loved every single character. Blue has characteristics I desire to have. She is quite but strong. She has the strong personality that doesn't require loud voices, violence, and being the center of attention at all times. Blue is caring, smart, hardheaded, and intuitive It was very refreshing to have a main female character that is strong in a reliable and containable way.

The raven boys stole my heart, and I cannot decide who I love the most! I went into this thinking there would be a distinct male character that we all would fall in love with, but nope there isn't. They all will steal a different piece of your heart, and every individual part they individually fill make you whole and you can't live without all of them. You inhale these boys and their background stories. I won't tell you which boy has which characteristic because I'm mean (remember when I say it's best going in blind)? So characteristics you can expect to see are; independent, dependent, shy, hardheaded, misunderstood, hardworking, sad, mean, lovable, and so much more. If I gave you more characteristics it would be spoilers. Are you tired of me hiding stuff from you? Go read this book so we can talk about all the amazing details I'm keeping a secret!

The parts that I listened to on audio were fun. The narrator had a deep and interesting voice. Will Paton yes the actor is the narrator of The Raven Boys. It was fun having an actor read the book, because he was willing to really put himself out there. It felt like he got into the characters mind, and acted out their emotions in a beautiful way. I obviously recommend the audio version because of that, but I liked the book either way.
If you have a hard time getting into a book that is a little mysterious and leaves you confused in the beginning (I promise it's meant to feel confusing at first) I would suggest the audio version because it's easier to get into that way.

If you are use to pushing through the confusion, I suggest curling up with a blanket, sit by a window, and grab a nice cup of tea or coffee (or both, I won't judge). This is the perfect read to give you the feels of fall. It has all the elements that a fall read needs. Now is the perfect time to read this book, so what are you waiting for?
Let me know your thoughts on the book, did you fall as hard for it as I did?
Is it starting to feel like fall where you live?
I hope you guys are having an amazing day!

Top Ten Tuesday: Gateway Books Published 5, 10, 15 Years ago

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

This week:

Gateway books published 5, 10, or 15 Years Ago

Fun fact: I took a college a day the day Twilight came out in theaters. The reasons being so I could go to my favorite coffee shop, read Twilight before the movie, and have a date with a boy I had a crush on (who is now my hubby so win win). I have to say that was one of the best days I ever had.
This book got me back into reading like many of you, and I will always love Twilight for that.

I read Twilight over, over, and over again. This was one of the first books that got me to end my Twilight reading marathon. I read many of the books, but lost interests after awhile. Too many books in the series for me.

I read Harry Potter my first year of college. The obsession was real, and still is.

Another fun fact: Chris and I love this series so much we named our cat Percy.
Sadly our Percy isn't brave like Jackson. However when he finds one of my bobby pins he does become entertaining, and he is a lovable little thing. So I guess he has SOME of Jackson's qualities.
I loved this book, and it introduced me to middle grade reads.

This was one of the first sequels that I truly loved.

Anna and the French Kiss was the first contemporary book I ever loved, and it pushed me to give this genre more of a chance.

I mean do I need to say anything about this one? Well okay but only one word, Will.

This bad boy was my introduction to dystopian reads. I was hooked from the first page. Also this was the first book Chris and I read together.

The Goddess Test introduced me to what I like to call the "pallet cleanser" books. The ones that you read during a book slump, or when you've finished a heavy book that left you drained. It's nice and fluffy. It's a fun read to get you back into the swing of things.

I really loved Kami in this book. She had a strong personality and unapologetic lived her life the way she wanted, and it was thrilling to read! In another life I would like to think I would be a journalist, and I got to live through Kami. The main female protagonists showed me that not all YA girls are completely dependent on others.

Question for you: Did this weeks Top Ten make anyone else feel old? I felt older and older with every book I put on this list haha!
Make sure to leave your links down below =)
Happy reading,
